Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by a fungus called Histoplasma that lives in the environment, especially in soil. People can get this infection by breathing in tiny spores from the fungus.
Many people who breathe in the spores do not get sick at all. When illness does occur, symptoms can be mild, like a cough or flulike feelings. Some people, especially those with weakened immune systems, can develop a more serious infection.
Most cases affect the lungs and go away on their own. In rare cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening if not treated.
Histoplasmosis occurs in many parts of the world, with higher risk in certain areas. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 500,000 cases occur each year.
